Ambatovy


Ambatovy is a large tonnage, long-life nickel and cobalt mining enterprise located in Madagascar. The project is the largest ever foreign investment in the country and one of the biggest in sub Saharan Africa and Indian Ocean region. In construction phase the project created more than 15,000 jobs and now employs some 6,000 staff on a permanent basis. Capacity is 60,000 tonnes of refined nickel, 5,600 tonnes of cobalt and 210,000 tonnes of ammonium sulphate fertilizer. Ambatovy is one of the world’s largest lateritic nickel mines.

  • A vertically integrated nickel and cobalt mining and refining joint venture.
  • The mine constitutes one of the biggest lateritic nickel reserves, with a mine life of approximately 29 years.
  • The ore is surface-mined, and transported to the ore preparation plant for mixing with water
  • Slurried ore is transported to the refinery via a 220 km long pipeline.
  • A hydrometallurgical process converts the ore into high purity cobalt and nickel briquettes.
  • 2016 production of 3,170 MT cobalt and 42,100 MT nickel (design capacity of 5,600 MT and 60,000 MT).
